CO2-neutralised reinforcing steel for Travemünde underground car park

Lübecker Baugesellschaft Schütt used 1,664 tonnes of CO2-neutralised reinforcing steel from SÜLZLE Stahlpartner in Lübeck for an underground car park in the “Am Baggersand” residential quarter in Travemünde.

“The underground car park at Baggersand is our pilot project with Sülzle Stahlpartner GmbH. There are various ways to make building sustainable. As an infinitely recyclable and reusable material, steel offers many advantages for climate-friendly construction. Here we make a climate protection contribution per tonne of reinforcing steel with a positive effect on the globalCO2 balance by means of compensation, for which high-quality climate protection certificates were acquired via the steel supplier,” reports Oliver Schuldt, Managing Director of Friedrich Schütt + Sohn Baugesellschaft and responsible for the construction sector.

Christine Koretzky, Managing Director of Lübecker Bauverein, also welcomes the compensation: “On the one hand, we urgently need new living space, on the other hand, construction is responsible for a considerable part of the CO2 emissions. Using every opportunity to save CO2 helps to break through the paradox. As long as CO2-free production is not yet possible, high-quality climate protection certificates are an important and right first step.”

The underground car park was completed in mid-November 2022 after a good year of construction. The shell construction for the total of 254 flats is also almost complete.

SÜLZLE is accordingly aware of its responsibility to keep the carbon footprint of its upstream suppliers as low as possible. SÜLZLE only procures reinforcing steel from electric steel production, which already means a reduction of the CO2 footprint by approx. 70 % compared to conventional production in the blast furnace. In addition, SÜLZLE sources its reinforcing steel from specially selected suppliers. This means that the CO2 footprint can be reduced by a further approx. 30 % compared to the standard electric steel production. With CO2-neutralised reinforcing steel, the emissions that cannot currently be reduced are offset by compensation.
