New possibilities with galvanized reinforcing steel

Hot-dip galvanized reinforcing steel has been approved by the building authorities in Germany since 1981 (approval no.: Z-1.4-165) and is used in many areas, but until now it has only been possible for reinforcing steel bending companies to carry out this work at great expense and expense.

With the entry into force of the new general building supervisory approval in January 2019, there were significant innovations here, such as the possibility of reducing the concrete cover in exposure classes XC1 to XC4.

Hot-dip galvanised reinforcing steels in carbonated concrete offer clear advantages in terms of corrosion protection compared with unzinc-coated reinforcing steels. The associated savings in concrete not only provide advantages in terms of statics, but also give new scope for design.

Above all, however, bending the reinforcing steel before hot-dip galvanizing is now permitted. For the first time, it is now possible to have further processed products such as mat baskets, hooks, loops or brackets hot-dip galvanized, provided that the specified bending roller diameters are taken into account or proof has been provided by a process test prior to construction.

This important change reduces the total effort in rebar fab shops enormously, which ultimately results in a significant reduction of costs and delivery time.
